Maintaining Clarity

Maintaining Clarity Amidst the Challenges of Modern Times

The world has become a complex, busy, challenging place. It can be difficult to cut through the noise to focus on what’s truly important. It can also be hard to achieve mental and emotional clarity. Drastic changes have occurred in our world in a very short time, and people are facing unprecedented challenges, the nature of which was unknown only one hundred years ago. We’re writing the script as we’re acting in the play, and it has resulted in mental health challenges for many, if not most, people. The good news is that we can move toward clarity by acknowledging our circumstances and taking steps to address our challenges.

An abrupt change

From day to day, it may not seem that the world is changing much, but in truth, it is changing rapidly and dramatically. Life was profoundly different one hundred years ago. Radios and telegraphs were cutting-edge. Airplanes were new, and most homes lacked basic amenities such as refrigerators, phones, and indoor plumbing. Most people lived in rural areas, while now, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. Life was slower-paced one hundred years ago; it’s difficult to keep up with the constant flow of information, opinions, and events in today’s world. Any change can be challenging, but the pace of social, technological, and lifestyle changes is incredible. In modern times, it’s vital to be intentional and clear about what you pay attention to, how you use your time, and how you manage your thoughts and emotions.

New challenges

Humanity has always faced hardships. And while the challenges we face now may not seem as dire and immediate as those of our ancestors, they are real and, more importantly, new. The difficulties created by the fast pace of change include the following:

  • Information overload. An enormous amount of news, social media content, opinions, and other digital noise constantly bombards us, which can result in burnout, anxiety, and a fear of missing out.
  • Isolation. Life is becoming increasingly anonymous, isolating, and lonely, lacking traditional support systems such as communities and families that remain close by.
  • Pace of change. In the past, life was more predictable; careers, technologies, and social roles remained static. However, change is now constant—technology, jobs, norms, and even identities are evolving rapidly, leading to a sense of instability and uncertainty.

It’s important to recognize these challenges and their consequences, and to devise a strategy to address them.

Taking steps to achieve clarity

While the world may seem overwhelming right now, it is possible to take control of your life—what you focus on, how you spend your time, and how you care for yourself. The first step is to assess your current state. How are you feeling, and what, specifically, is making you feel that way? What are you giving your attention to, and what are you ignoring? How are you taking care of yourself, and what emotional and physical help do you need to do that? The following are some specific steps and ideas to help you get control of your life and to help you cope with the impacts of the challenges you face:

  1. Reduce distractions. Just because there is a constant stream of content doesn’t mean you have to see it or even acknowledge it. Choose what you focus on based on what is beneficial to you, and be disciplined about laying off everything else.
  2. Focus on your well-being. This includes getting enough sleep, eating and drinking to fuel your body and provide it with what it needs, and engaging in physical activity to stay fit in ways that give sunshine, fresh air, and exposure to nature.
  3. Connect with others. Make engaging with family and friends a priority. Schedule it and make time for it. Your connections to others provide a lifeline to what’s truly important.
  4. Work on your mental and emotional health. In the past, mental health was ignored or stigmatized. However, there is now greater awareness and acceptance, and you can take advantage of that. Treat your mental health as you do your physical health.

Achieving mental and emotional clarity is not always easy, but it is vital. When you’re clear about what’s essential, you can disregard everything else and focus on the life you want.
