Focus on the Good

Don’t Let the Bad Become Everything

Focus on the good in your life.

When things are going smoothly, it is easy to focus on what is good. You may still have small headaches and minor setbacks, but overall, life feels steady and positive. It is when things go south that staying positive becomes both more difficult and more important.

Focusing only on the negative aspects of your life can become a slippery slope. It may lead to self-pity, catastrophizing, and prioritizing the wrong things. Developing the habit of keeping the good things in your life—both past and future—at the forefront of your thoughts can help keep negativity at bay and allow you to stay focused on the path toward your goals.

Learning Lessons

If you focus on the good aspects of your life, how will you learn from past mistakes or setbacks?

It is a matter of perspective. There are different ways to frame mistakes and setbacks. One approach leads to blame, defensiveness, and a spiral of pessimism in which nothing feels right. A better approach is to focus on moving forward by constructively assessing what happened and identifying what you might do differently in the future.

If you concentrate on your desired outcomes and what you have learned, you will be much more likely to achieve your goals than if you focus only on the mistakes themselves or who should be blamed for them.

Positive Focus

Some people seem more skilled at focusing on the positive than others. Are these people naturally predisposed to be happy, successful, and fulfilled? Maybe to some degree. But positive focus is also a skill like any other. It takes practice, and it benefits from good habits.

But how do you practice something that seems more like a condition than a skill? How do you cultivate something that feels more like an outcome than a tactic?

There are several specific practices that can help you develop a more positive focus:

  • Optimism: Expecting positive outcomes and viewing setbacks as temporary. This may be challenging, especially if you need to replace old expectations with ones that are more aligned with your goals.
  • Gratitude: Identifying and appreciating the good things in your daily life. Everyone has aspects of life that bring happiness, comfort, meaning, or fulfillment. Focusing on these rather than only on life’s challenges can help you strengthen your ability to maintain a positive focus.
  • Mindfulness: Living in the moment and experiencing life fully. In this day and age, it is easy to become distracted and diverted. Be intentional about bringing your mind back to the present.
  • Strengths: Engaging in work and activities that draw on your talents, aptitudes, and interests. The more your daily life allows you to use your strengths, the easier it becomes to feel energized, capable, and connected to your purpose.

Focus on Your Priorities

How you define a meaningful and fulfilling life will involve tasks, goals, and desired outcomes. These are the milestones that guide you toward what you want from life and, more importantly, help you understand how to get there.

Part of maintaining a positive focus is paying attention to what matters most to you. When you allow yourself to dwell on the negative, you may begin giving too much attention to things that do not support your desired outcomes. It is important to identify not only what you want to achieve, but also the steps you need to take to get there.

Of course, everyone has duties and responsibilities that are not perfectly aligned with their personal goals. Some are required by your job, your family, or your household. Others may directly support the well-being or desired outcomes of someone you care about. But when too much of your energy is spent on things that do not align with your values, responsibilities, or meaningful relationships, frustration can build, and your path can become less clear.

Everyone, at some point, experiences a challenge, setback, or tragedy that gets under their skin. It is important to have a process for letting those experiences go while retaining the wisdom gained from them. Positive focus helps you internalize the good, learn from the difficult, and stay true to your life’s path.
